Modern Times
Details
Filmed in the shadow of the Great Depression, during an era when machines began to devour humanity, this film presents one of cinema's most incisive social satires. Charlie Chaplin conveys the anxieties and contradictions of that era not merely through a single character, but by painting a picture of an entire civilization. Every scene reflected on the screen carries a meaning far beyond ordinary comedy. Chaplin's iconic Tramp character appears here perhaps in his most vulnerable form. The journey that begins as a factory worker doomed to make the same movement over and over again on an endless tape eventually turns into both a physical and mental breakdown. The effort to reduce the human being of the industrial age to a cog in a machine, a screw in a machine, is both amusing and poignant through Chaplin's masterfully crafted physical comedy. While laughing, you become aware of things without realizing it. One of the most impressive aspects of the film is the story of hope that sprouts from deep loneliness. Two strangers from the same world, met in the middle of turbulent streets, cling to each other to survive. The young woman portrayed by Paulette Goddard truly belongs in this world with her vulnerability and resilience. Watching the chemistry between the two characters both makes the audience smile and moves them deeply. Chaplin's persistent choice of silence during a period when cinema was transitioning to sound film represents a conscious stance far beyond mere nostalgia. It establishes a language that is told not by speech, but by movement, mimicry and rhythm. This language is still universally understood today. A film in which automation, unemployment and the individual's helplessness against the system are handled with such skill has managed to survive for decades without losing its validity. What was said in 1936 returns with a surprising resonance in today's world. While watching, you sometimes wonder: Did the era depicted in this film really exist in the past?

I wonder how many people watch this nowadays and sympathise immediately with Chaplin's unskilled worker trying to keep up with the relentless march of technology? It starts with him being an unwilling guinea pig for a gadget that appears as useful for cleaning teeth as it is for feeding him - a cunning invention which allegedly saves time, money and increases productivity... Needless to say, it's a crock of the proverbial - but that's just the start with these wacky, frequently absurd, ideas tha...
