Once Upon a Time in America
Details
There are some films that are remembered more for the weight they left behind than for the mastery of their narrative. This production, which is the pinnacle of Sergio Leone's film career, leaves exactly that kind of feeling inside you. The legendary director of Spaghetti Westerns has changed his genre but preserved his essence: the melancholy of lost time, betrayal, regret and wounds that never close. This epic journey spanning New York from the 1920s to the 1960s is not only a gangster story but also a story of loss. We follow a group of friends who grew up in a Jewish neighborhood as they evolve into figures within the underworld over the years. However, Leone neither romanticizes this world nor presents it as if teaching a moral lesson. There is no judgment in the narrative; only life itself exists—dirty, twisted, and at times unbearably painful. Perhaps the most striking aspect of the film is its approach to time. Its structure, constantly shifting between past and future, creates a puzzle in the viewer's mind. However, when this puzzle reaches an unsettling clarity, what is felt within is not merely the satisfaction of a solution; it is a profound shock. Robert De Niro delivers one of the most introspective and complex performances of his career here. James Woods, on the other hand, dominates the stage with a vibrant energy in front of her. The chemistry between the two characters is one of the strongest elements that sustains the film's dramatic backbone. The sad and inevitable feeling conveyed by Elizabeth McGovern is also etched in memory. Ennio Morricone's music, too, is a work of poetry in itself. As you listen to those notes that fill the space behind the scene rather than the scene itself, you realize that the film is not merely viewed with the eyes; it is felt with the body. With a runtime of over four hours, this production does not appeal to impatient audiences. But the experience it offers to those who give it their time is of a kind rarely found in cinema. What remains behind—regret, loyalty, or betrayal—each viewer finds their own answer. And this answer haunts me long after the end.

Stereotypical Sergio Leone film with endless waitings and sight crossings. One of the performances that made Robert de Niro de actor he is and an interesting way of telling a story and the evolution of America during the years of the alcohol prohibition.

**It's an excellent film, which proves the importance of good post-production, and how bad editing can ruin the whole thing.** There are certain films that impress us so much when we see them that we are really surprised when we discover how ignored they were by the great awards. This film is one of them: I was really shocked to find that it wasn't even nominated for an Oscar or a Golden Globe… and I had to read a bit to understand why that happened. The film is perhaps one of the best in ...

Told by way of a really potent (and well scored by Morricone) retrospective, this sits us down and takes us through a forty year period in the life of the now down-at-heel "Noodles" (Robert De Niro) and of the development of the city of New York. The contents of an old briefcase serve as an aide memoire as the retrospective illustrates just how he and three of his childhood friends decided that the gutter was not for them, and that using the "system" to get on was the only way. Prohibition, viol...
