O Auto da Compadecida

One of the most beloved works of Brazilian cinema, this film begins in the scorching deserts of northeastern Brazil, in a world where poverty and hope are intertwined. This geography, known as the Sertão, is reflected on the screen as if it were a character in itself, with its drought, inequality, and deep-rooted folk beliefs. Guel Arraes draws inspiration from Ariano Suassuna's iconic theater play, and manages to both entertain and provoke thought, while occasionally tug at one's heartstrings. Joao Grilo and Chico's adventure goes far beyond a classic good-evil conflict. These two characters are ones you can never decide whether they are smart, naive, immoral, or innocent. Ready to knock on every door and seize every opportunity to survive, the actions of these two make you laugh and cause you to find yourself next to them despite them. Because the film shows how poverty obliges a person to be cunning, and how cruel the social hierarchy can be, while it does so not in a heavy language, but with that peculiar festival of folk tales. Later in the narrative, the story moves to a completely different dimension. The concepts of religion, justice and forgiveness begin to be questioned in an absurd but profound way. In the film, Christian images and figures are blended with folk humor in such a way that this mixture is neither disrespectful nor vulgar; on the contrary, it reflects the faith of the ordinary person and the form of closeness to God in an extremely human and warm framework. Fernanda Montenegro's entrance onto the stage is an unforgettable moment in itself. Matheus Nachtergaele and Selton Mello's complementary performances are among the elements that embody the spirit of the film. The duo so expertly strikes the balance between two distinct temperaments that every scene flows in a natural rhythm. This work, which simultaneously touches upon Brazilian culture, folk narratives, and universal human issues, is of the kind that lingers in the mind long after being watched. Because it is one of the rare films that can simultaneously evoke laughter and profound sadness, it deserves a special place in our hearts.

This film is deeply steeped in Brazilian culture, which may make it inaccessible to some. It's based on a play by Ariano Suassuna, who made his life's mission to preserve Brazilian culture. If you're put off by the surrealistic religion scenes, keep in mind that this spiritualism was still firmly anchored in Brazil in 2000, along with the mash-up of African beliefs - candomblé. I loved the Laurel-and-Hardy style of comedy. The film was not short on laughs. The actors' comedic timing is spot o...
