Denis Villeneuve demonstrated one of the pinnacles of Canadian filmmaking with this work he directed in 2010. Based on the stage work of the Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad of the same name, the film takes the audience on a harsh journey both geographically and emotionally, while releasing its roots in the blood-soaked lands of the Lebanese civil war Tue. The story begins with a will. Twin brothers who lost their mother realize that they never really knew the woman they thought belonged to her. The letters in their hands lead them into the depths of the past, to ruined villages, nameless cemeteries, and secrets buried for years. Villeneuve constructs this quest not through a linear narrative but by intertwining the past with the present. The period when their mother lived as a young woman and the moment when their children sought the truth are skillfully intertwined. This choice of narrative structure places the viewer right in the middle of the story; While watching the portrait of a suffering mother on one side, you feel in your heart the anxiety of two children tracing the scars of that pain on the other. Lubna Azabal delivers an outstanding performance as their mother Nawal. With her silence, gaze, and body posture, she carries decades and countless sorrows. Watching the character undergo transformation weighs heavily on the audience's chest. Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, on the other hand, holds the anchor of the story as a fragile yet determined figure representing her brother. The film's real strength lies in not using war as an abstract backdrop. The brutality of the Lebanese civil war, orphanages, militias and massacres are not an element of decoration; they appear as facts engraved on the soul of the characters. Instead of depicting violence with pornographic curiosity, Villeneuve prefers to show its traces, remnants, and reflections on the human face. This is exactly what makes the film unbearable. The truth that awaits you at the end is etched in memory as one of cinema's most shocking endings. As the loan stories unfold, you'll find yourself sitting quietly; because some stories don't end when they're finished.

Great movie for a great and tough story. Good photography and cut, the story is well developed and the performances are superb. Also, it doesn't fail on being over dramatic. Just the perfect balance. A must to be seen.

_Incendies_ crawls under your skin and stays there. Villeneuve sets the mood with silence, shadow, and slow-burn tension, building a mystery with the weight of a Greek tragedy. Some parts drag, but they add gravity to the gut-punch revelations. It’s emotionally manipulative in the best way—bleak, bold, and beautifully done.
