Have you ever wondered where the legend of Santa Claus came from? What could really be behind this story that has been told for centuries? Directed by Sergio Pablos, this animation becomes one of the most beautiful surprises of modern animated cinema by reconstructing a beloved legend with a fresh, warm and highly original perspective. The story begins with a young, arrogant and irresponsible postman being exiled to the dreary, frozen town of Smeerensburg. The color of life has already faded on this small island, which has almost turned into a bloodbath with years of family conflicts, and the smile on people's faces has almost been forgotten. In such an environment, even seeking meaning becomes an act that requires courage in itself. But in the dim forest on the edge of the town, the house of an elderly and mysterious toymaker who has withdrawn from society appears like an unexpected light right in the middle of this dark painting. Pablos skillfully builds the bridge between these two different characters. One has withdrawn from life, the other has never taken life seriously; but both secretly feel something is missing. Watching how this deficiency is filled, how a transformation is triggered by the joy on the children's faces, both makes the viewer laugh and squeezes his insides at unexpected moments. From a technical standpoint, the film is also extremely noteworthy. Its visual language, which blends traditional 2D animation with a three-dimensional depth, differs markedly from conventional productions with light games that are reflected on the frame as if they were hit with a brush. Each frame feels almost as if it were straight out of an illustration book. This production, which speaks directly to adults, strikes a delicate balance between nostalgia and naivety. He tells us that kindness is contagious, that a smile can change a town, and that even the most desperate people can transform; he neither preaches nor exaggerates while doing so. Universal themes such as family, responsibility, loneliness and the power of bonding are so naturally woven into a funny story that you find yourself on the streets of this small town without realizing it. And when the movie ends, the warmth that remains inside you as the screen goes black doesn't fade away for a long time.

A beauty. What a lovely, charming and clever film. <em>'Klaus'</em> took my interest and then some, I was locked in from the start. It's terrific, with some excellent hand-drawn animation. The cast, led by Jason Schwartzman, do very good jobs, also. I loved seeing it connect all the dots of Santa, Christmas et al. If you think about it, it's actually rather simple but it's done in a smart and pleasant way. The ending is particularly sweet. Away from the heart, it also has humour and the pa...
