In this striking film by Nadine Labaki, the story of a childhood trapped between concrete walls in the darkest corners of Beirut is told. The Lebanese director unscrupulously focuses his camera on a great reality and never leaves the audience at peace. Twelve-year-old Zain is a character created not by the system but by life itself. This child, unregistered, undocumented, and whose name is not even mentioned anywhere officially, grows up in a family plagued by poverty and neglect. However, Zain is not an ordinary victim. There is a will in this child, who carries so much in his eyes compared to his age, that refuses to be broken. Labaki brings him to the screen in a way that both moves and inspires admiration; this balance constitutes one of the film's strongest aspects. The film opts for a fragmented structure rather than a chronological order. It opens with a scene of interrogation in a courtroom, and the audience realizes from the very first frame that this is no ordinary drama. Zain is suing his parents in court; for giving him life. This confrontation is both the starting point and the moral essence of the film. One realizes that something inside them is shaken when they hear such a grave accusation from a child's mouth. The chaotic, colorful, and brutal life on the streets of Beirut is captured on camera with documentary realism. The fact that the vast majority of players live under similar conditions in real life adds to the realism of the game. Zain Al Rafeea's outstanding performance carries the entire burden of the script and achieves this without resorting to any artificiality. The relationship established with Ethiopian refugee Rahil and the little baby Yonas forms the emotional heart of the film; the bond between them points to something much deeper than blood Decoupling, the solidarity of people who cling to each other to survive. Capernaum is not an easy-to-watch movie. It disturbs, it forces, it feels almost unbearable at times. But that's exactly why it's important. This film, in which invisible people are made visible and the voices of children who have been pushed out of the system echo, leaves not only sadness in the viewer, but also a deep questioning. This work, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, serves as a reminder of how potent the power of cinematic language remains in conveying social reality.

**_I wouldn't call it entertaining per se, but it's certainly provocative_** >_I saw kids who are so neglected, so abused that there's nothing anymore in their eyes. These children don't laugh, don't cry, and don't play. If you put a toy in front of them, they don't touch it. They are just numb. There's no more childhood in their eyes. After seeing these kids many times, when they started to have a trusting relationship with me, I used to ask them, "are you happy to be alive?" Ninety-nine per...

There’s something distinctly Dickensian about the urchin style of life lived by “Zain” (Zain Al-Rafeea) on the modern-day streets of Lebanon. He has to use his wits and guile, his charm and his youth to scrape a living after he ran away from his parents. He did this because they gave his beloved eleven-year-old sister to be married! He lucks out a little in that he quickly encounters “Rahil” (Yordanos Shiferaw) who is herself a refugee from Ethiopia and who needs some help looking after her baby...
