Some stories reveal their full meaning not at the moment they are told, but after they are finished. This 2019 film by Céline Sciamma offers exactly such an experience: it is one of the rare works that even silence has meaning, which continues to echo in the minds after the curtains are closed. 18. set on a remote island in Decennial France, the story centers on a forbidden love that sprouts between two women. But to dismiss this film as mere description would be a mischaracterization, for Sciamma constructs something far more layered here. The relationship between a painter who has to secretly draw what he is looking at and a young girl who avoids being looked at also becomes a Decently philosophical inquiry into seeing and being seen. Is looking a power, or an act of love? Is the painter who paints a portrait, or the model who looks at the painter, really the "seeing" side? The film never explicitly asks these questions, but makes them felt in every frame. The chemistry between Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel is established through looks rather than words. Sciamma compresses the dialogue as much as possible and fills the space with visuals. The costumes of the period, the cold and alien nature of the island, the interiors illuminated by candlelight — all this is not just the decor, but the reflection of the inner world of the characters. Each scene is framed as if it were a painting; this is not merely a formal choice but a conscious language that integrates with the essence of the story. The film contains a scene inspired by Greek mythology that alone encapsulates everything that can be said about the permanence of love and the inevitability of loss. Without spoiling anything, it suffices to say this: What happens on the screen at that moment presents one of the most powerful visual metaphors in the history of cinema. Where and how Vivaldi's music is used in the film is a surprise in itself. Sciamma avoids music almost throughout the entire film; therefore, when the music finally kicks in, it catches the audience off guard and shakes them. Films that convey the female experience, desire, and freedom with such unadulterated honesty are extremely rare. In doing this, Sciamma neither romanticizes the pain nor surrenders hope. It brings to the screen those brief, bright, unchanging moments that truly exist within life. And that's why this film continues to haunt you long after you've watched it.

As the credits began to roll on ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’, I was practically incapable of moving or speaking. Every time I didn’t think the film could possibly get any better, Céline Sciamma elevated it to even greater, more incomprehensible heights, culminating in one of the most extraordinary moments in 21st-century cinema. This is a rare and precious film, breathtaking in its craft and intensely honest in its passions. This is a film that aches, that longs, that dances in ecstasy and raise...

Céline Sciamma, writer and director of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” calls her period film a “manifesto on the male gaze.” This is the most accurate, elegant description of her story of a romance between two French women in the late 1700s. This is an impeccably detailed, beautifully acted, refined drama with a strong feminist angle that’s as stirring as it is thought-provoking. Marianne (Noémie Merlant) is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), a young woman who...

Few romance movies capture the totality of love, loss, and remembrance in the way Sciamma does in this film. The story is simple: Marianne (Noémie Merlant) has been hired to paint a portrait of Heloise (Adèle Haenel) to be sent to the Milanese nobleman she ...
