A story that begins on Fujisawa's quiet coastline, seemingly bearing the hallmarks of ordinary high school life, actually swims in much deeper waters. "Seeing the Dream of the Girl Who Dreams", this film, which follows the beloved anime series, offers an extremely ingenious structure to catch the audience emotionally unprepared. Sakuta Azusagawa went through a youthful period filled with unusual and mysterious events throughout the series. Now that they have someone they love by their side, life seems a little more stable. However, the doors of the past are opening once again, and this time the wind coming from within is blowing much stronger. The issue that settles at the center of the film is not just a romantic triangle or an ordinary emotional upheaval; it is a series of weighty questions based on identity, time and sacrifice. The fantastical elements discussed throughout the series under the name "Adolescence Syndrome" take on a completely different dimension in this film. It's no longer just about perceptual illusions or existential crises; it's really about how fragile the things we thought were unalterable are. The film gently yet firmly conveys this fragility to both the characters and the audience. Visually preserving Cloverworks' distinctive style, the production uses Fujisawa's seaside atmosphere almost as a character. The open sky and the sea, which feels endless, overlap so much with the inner world of the characters that at some point you start to question whether the landscape also suffers. The script never loses its emotional honesty. Making people cry without resorting to melodrama is a serious feat of skill, and the film largely manages this balance. The dialogues between the characters may seem ordinary on the surface, but each sentence holds layered meanings beneath the surface. In particular, the final part of the film retrospectively reinterprets everything that had been said before. It is unlikely to understand this film without watching the series; but when it is considered together with the series, it turns into a completed and meaningful story on its own. Sakuta's journey reaches a completely different level of maturity here, and the mark it leaves continues to resonate within you long after the film ends.
