It would not be an exaggeration to say that music is the most honest form of expression that can fit into a human lifetime. Based on the true story of Zach Sobiech, this production reminds us exactly that; sometimes a song can be the summary of an entire life, and sometimes it can become the most lasting legacy left to those left behind. The film, brought to life by Justin Baldoni's direction, paints a portrait of a young man forced to confront death right in the midst of adolescence. Zach's story, shaken by a rare bone cancer diagnosis, refuses to fit into the mold of a typical "disease melodrama." On the contrary, it shows how creative and determined an action holding on to life can be. Music is not an escape here; on the contrary, it becomes the most concrete proof of existence. Fin Argus plays this challenging role with a maturity that makes you forget how young the shoulders bearing it are. It adds both vulnerability and surprising joy to the character; the audience sometimes holds back their laughter, while at other times they don't even notice the tears. The closest friendship portrayed by Sabrina Carpenter also becomes an important element that establishes the emotional balance of the film. The chemistry between the two young actors protects the narrative from artificial sentimentality. One of the film's strongest aspects is its ability to convey hope without resorting to easy solutions. Watching a teenager who has dreamed of making music all his life prioritize this dream with the narrowing of time; it makes many viewers question their own deferred wishes, silent songs. Feeding on a real event also deepens this questioning even more; after turning off the screen, you notice that thoughts wander around in that story for a while. Many productions that deal with the theme of death either adopt an overly melodramatic tone or maintain a cold distance between themselves and the audience. This movie manages to avoid both. His sadness is real, his joy is sincere, and his music is permanent. 121 minutes is more than enough to remind us that a song can reach millions of people and that a young boy's voice can transcend time.
