Life Is Beautiful
Details
One of cinema's most daring and fragile moments is that rare moment when hope can sprout from within tragedy. This Italian masterpiece, both directed and animated by Roberto Benigni in 1997, dances right on this border; it is one of the very few films that shows that comedy and pain, innocence and horror can exist at the same time. The story begins within the magical world created by a playful and friendly Jewish man who clings tenaciously to life in 1930s Italy. Beyond being a bookstore employee, Guido lives like a poet; he even uses his imagination as a weapon to win over the woman he loves. This first part puts the viewer on a warm lap and relaxes; makes you laugh, opens you up. But this is a conscious establishment of comfort. Benigni deliberately draws you into that glittering world, because what happens next will leave a much deeper mark when compared to that light. When the shadow of World War II fell over Italy, the film also changed silently. But Benigni chooses neither to document the devastation of war, nor to overwhelm the viewer. Instead, he asks how paternal love can be a shield. Guido's narrative towards his young son contains something that both breaks hearts and heals them. That gentle lie a father devises to shield his child from reality is the soul of the film, and this soul never resorts to cheap manipulation. Benigni achieves an extraordinary balance here as both a comedian and a dramatic actor. You never want that joy in their eyes to fade away, but when you reach the place the movie takes you to, you're the one laughing and crying now. Nicoletta Braschi's quiet yet powerful presence and little Giorgio Cantarini's natural charm perfectly complement this equation. One of the rare films that does not surrender faith in life even while telling about one of the darkest periods of humanity, this work has gained a place in his heart all over the world, including three Oscar awards, and has continued to deepen, not to be erased over the years.

The first half of the screenplay is better than the second and in particular the weak ending which is very commercial Oscar material. However, there is Benigni, who is an old school visual comedian, and some of his antics are a delight. The period setting details are also well done.

<em>'Life Is Beautiful'</em> is certainly beautiful (in a sense), but is acutely haunting too. You can see where the film is heading from pretty much the get-go, though that only strengthens the grip that the film had on my mind. Evidently, it's an outstanding piece of filmmaking. I've, of course, seen plenty of flicks that feature this particular historical event, but I gotta say this one had a larger effect on me than is the norm. They are all saddening, obviously, but this one with the you...
