Top Gun
Details
the year 1986 was a time when Hollywood action cinema had just created its own language, and stories told with speed and adrenaline gained a new dimension on the big screen. Tony Scott also brought to the screen not only a military training film, but also the story of a young man's confrontation with himself, almost rendering the spirit of this period on the body of an F-14 Tomcat. When Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young, competent pilot who is never afraid to push boundaries, steps into the elite program where the best fighter pilots are trained, he has not only academic achievement pressure on him, but also a heavy shadow of the past. This shadow inherited from his father becomes both his greatest motivation and his deepest wound. Tom Cruise portrays this role without sparing his charisma at all, but paying attention to every detail of his body language; the viewer feels the turmoil inside Maverick from the moment he walks across the curtain. The film's atmosphere goes far beyond those mesmerizing flight scenes in the sky. The tension between rivals, how fragile friendships can be, and how loss can tear a person apart form the core of the narrative. When Val Kilmer's cold and calculating competitor figure, established as the "Iceman", is combined with the fiery personality of Maverick, two opposite poles that complement each other emerge, not an ordinary competition. Charlotte Blackwood, played by Kelly McGillis, embodies the film's romantic atmosphere, while this relationship serves as a window into Maverick's inner world. What is being told is not merely a love story, but the gradual collapse of a character's defenses. Harold Faltermeyer's iconic music, and especially Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone", integrates the overall energy of the film in such a way that the rhythm is not erased from the ears even when the scenes are over. In terms of cinematography, Tony Scott reveals one of the rare examples where light and movement are used so impressively; the lights hitting the metallic surfaces at sunset almost turn into an emotion. Deeply affecting popular culture, parodied many times and cited for decades, this production expertly handles identity, guilt and the desire to prove oneself under the surface appearance of an action movie. You don't have to think about these things; but after a while you realize you were thinking about them.

You'll struggle to find a more cheesy film, even so <em>'Top Gun'</em> is a super film. I need to check out more of Tony Scott's work because he has yet to let me down from the flicks of his that I've seen; on that note I'd put this below <em>'<a href="https://letterboxd.com/film/crimson-tide/" rel="nofollow">Crimson Tide</a>'</em> and <em><a href="https://letterboxd.com/film/unstoppable-2010/" rel="nofollow">Unstoppable</a>'</em>, but it is still one of his best I'm sure. The action is great...

MORE REVIEWS @ https://www.msbreviews.com/ Rewatched Top Gun before seeing the sequel. Its treatment of female characters clearly didn't age well, but I still had tons of fun. The aerial sequences remain exciting and the male camaraderie originates many memorable dialogues. Awesome score and iconic sunglasses. Rating: B

Back in 1986, "Take My Breath Away" was ubiquitous. It had airplay everywhere and made the band "Berlin" an household name. That is just about all, I have to say, that is memorable about this otherwise rather dull, testosterone driven, airborne adventure movie that really doesn't show these military elite in much of a good light. "Maverick" (Tom Cruise) is the aptly named hot-shot who is sent to the "Top Gun" flying school for the top 1% of the top 1%, where his individual style - along side his...

Top Gun is incredibly cheesy but has a ton of heart leading me to fall in love with the characters of this film. The plot was a bit weak, but the connections and development these characters had is what really made me enjoy it. The action sequences with fighter jets were bad and filmed poorly where I had a hard time distinguishing what was happening in the air. I enjoyed my time on the ground much more, and that held it back quite a bit. Score: 64% Verdict: Decent
