After We Fell
Details
The After series continues to be one of the most talked-about examples of the tradition of adapting young adult novels for the big screen. This production, the third film, brings Tessa and Hardin's turbulent relationship to a new breaking point and offers the audience perhaps the most emotionally intense part of the series. In this film, where Castille Landon sits in the director's chair, we see a Tessa who is now trying to walk with more confident steps. Her career dreams draw her to a new city and a new life; but the weight of the past, especially Hardin's shadow, haunts her. Josephine Langford brings this transition to the stage with believable vulnerability; she makes us feel both the moments of empowerment and disintegration of her character simultaneously. Hero Fiennes Tiffin once again takes on the most controversial character in the series. In this film, Hardin takes on a more complex character than ever before; jealousy, unpredictability, and a simmering inner anger surround him. But what the film cleverly constructs is this: Hardin's dark sides don't stem entirely from emptiness. The secrets that emerge about his family make him even more mysterious without making it easier to understand him. The family history in this film goes beyond being a mere background element and becomes central to the story. Both Tessa and Hardin confronting their roots makes them question the foundation upon which their relationship was built. One cannot help but ask whether love can provide a foundation when it is sufficient, or whether some walls are so thick that even love cannot bring them down. The film doesn't exactly break the conventional formula of romantic dramas; intense gazes, sudden fights, and emotional outbursts remain the series' indispensable language. However, in this episode, the dramatic tension dives into deeper waters and seeks answers to some of the questions that have accumulated in the viewer's mind throughout the series. Each answer brings with it a new question. For fans of the series, this film serves as a critical juncture that leaves them wondering where Tessa and Hardin's story will evolve. It's almost impossible to watch without connecting.

I seem to recall seeing the previous episode of this trilogy in the cinema - a beneficiary of the lockdown dearth that propelled some serious dross onto the big screen. This, mercifully, never found a home there and so could be watched, half-heartedly, from the comfort of my own living room. The rather uninspiring, self-indulgent characterisations of "Tess" (Josephine Langford) and "Hardin" (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) continue to vacillate from loving to loathing each other for reasons that continued ...

This is the point in the movie where everything goes haywire, veering off a cliff into confusion, leaving you wondering what you're even watching. Felt like a repetition without the depth of a storyline, filled with plot holes and rushed scenes that felt forced. If you're going to commit to a franchise, then commit wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, this installment falls short, making it the weakest link in the trilogy.

While not my favorite, this one is still up there. In this one, Hardin befriend Tessa's homeless father (as well as a junkie!). They bond together and drink, which turned out to be my favorite part of the movie. Some really great acting, especially when Hardin hands him money to go buy drugs, killing him in the process. He also takes the time to cheat on his girlfriend multiple times, while she is busy trying to mourn their relationship. He then keeps blaming her, in a masterclass of gaslighting...
