Being caught between two opposing worlds creates profound contradictions, both personally and socially. Directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, this Netflix production delves into these very contradictions and poses thought-provoking questions about love, identity, and sacrifice. The character portrayed by Sofia Carson is a determined and idealistic young woman who has invested her dreams in music. For this character, who is financially depressed due to health problems, the solution comes from an extremely unusual way: to marry a soldier who will soon be sent to Iraq on paper. The soldier character portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine, on the other hand, is from a completely different world; someone with different values, different wounds, and different expectations. The deep ideological divide between the two becomes both a source of tension and humor in the first half of the film. However, at one point the story abandons this light-hearted tone and confronts a much harsher reality. This relationship, which began as a contractual one, is beginning to transform due to unexpected developments. Rosenbaum tells this story without rushing the transformation, allowing the characters to discover each other layer by layer. The audience also witnesses the slow collapse of the walls between two people during this process. Carson carries both the emotional and musical backbone of the film. With her voice and stage presence, she brings believable depth to the character, while Galitzine expertly portrays the introverted and fragile military figure. The chemistry between the two keeps the screen alive despite some predictable plot twists. The film tries to go beyond being just a love story. Social issues such as American military culture, healthcare system inequalities, and class differences are subtly woven into the romantic narrative. This layered structure reminds the viewer that what they are watching is not merely a romantic fantasy. Yes, some moments cross the line into melodrama at times, and certain themes remain superficial. However, the film's overall atmosphere, particularly the music's contribution to the narrative and the dynamic between the two leads, is enough to keep the audience engaged. This journey, full of emotional ups and downs, finally makes you feel what really needs to be felt: how difficult and how inevitable it is to connect.
