Marvel One-Shot: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer
Details
Four minutes. This mini-feature, one of the shortest films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, manages to captivate the audience despite its brevity. This short film, which centers on the character of Agent Coulson, proves how much fun an ordinary moment can be inside a superhero universe without the need for big bang scenes or expensive effects. Clark Gregg brings his familiar calm demeanor and dry humor to the role of Coulson. On the way to the Avengers movies, this important figure of SHIELD working in the background looks like someone you might run into in any town, in any grocery store, in his white shirt and caravan form. But appearances are deceptive. This simple truth forms the basis of all the film's humor and tension. The Marvel One-Shot series was designed to bridge the gaps between the main films and give supporting characters some breathing room. In this particular case, the aim is to paint a portrait of the extraordinary hidden within the ordinary in a universe where nothing happens by chance. What happens at the checkout of a grocery store during Coulson's journey to reach Thor's hammer offers both a character study and a small but cute window into the inner workings of the MCU world. This short work, shaped by Leythum's direction, addresses its subject matter with a direct and clean narrative style, free of unnecessary embellishments. The ordinary convenience store atmosphere of small-town America goes far beyond being a backdrop in the film; it becomes the stage for the action. This is a work that stands on its own merits solely through timing and acting power, with a small cast, a single setting, and almost no music. For viewers accustomed to the noise of big-budget Marvel films, this feels like a brief moment of respite. But it also reminds me of this: a real hero does not always carry his cloak or armor. Sometimes a tie is also enough.

If we’re being honest with one another, it’s just an advertisement, and an advertisement that adds basically nothing to the MCU. But damn if it doesn’t put a smile on my face. _Final rating:★★★ - I liked it. Would personally recommend you give it a go._

Coulson being his usual "just doing my job" non-hero hero self complete with deadpan wit. Found as an extra on the Captain America: The First Avenger disc, and among the collected One-Shots on the bonus disc in the Phase 1 box set.
