Saving Private Ryan
Details
Steven Spielberg's 1998 war epic has gone down in history as one of the rare works in cinema that conveys the unbearable weight of man in such a raw and brutal way. Many films that brought World War II to the big screen either romanticize the war or show it from a safe distance, far away. Here, however, the exact opposite is true; the audience finds themselves immersed in that muddy, bloody, and chaotic reality from the very first minutes. The opening sequence depicting the Normandy landings is considered one of the most shocking and realistic scenes in cinema history. This scene feels like a testimony, not a performance. The trembling gaze of the camera, the broken and raw texture of the sound, everything reminds the audience that the war is not an epic of heroism, but a crisis of existence in the fullest sense. At the core of the film lies a profound moral dilemma: How legitimate is it to risk the lives of others to save a single person? This question never ceased to be asked throughout the advance of an eight-man unit through the shattered lands of Normandy. The character of Captain Miller, played by Tom Hanks, emerges as a man carrying this question on his shoulders; tired, determined, yet fragile deep down. Hanks bears the weight of a lifetime with just his gaze, without needing much words. Spielberg doesn't just describe a rescue operation here. It masterfully explores the rift between a sense of duty and the instinct for self-preservation, and how war can both heroize and disintegrate a person. Each character must confront their own existence; cowardice and courage are not sharply distinguished from each other in this film. Janusz Kaminski's cinematography and John Williams's unusually simple music transform the film from an epic production into a human document. Breathing becomes difficult for 169 minutes; however, this heaviness is the film's greatest virtue. Saving Private Ryan does not make you forget about the war, on the contrary, it reminds you. And this reminder still strikes with the same severity today.

Great WWII war action in France, but too much of the drama is weak RELEASED IN 1998 and directed by Steven Spielberg, "Saving Private Ryan" (SPR) is about the Normandy invasion and its immediate aftermath from June 6-16, 1944. The focus is on a Captain (Tom Hanks) and his men who are commissioned to find a paratrooper (Matt Damon) whose brothers have been killed in action. No one's supposed to say anything bad about SPR. To do so is considered sacrilege, but I have to be honest about what ...

This movie should be known for changing Historical War Dramas as we know them. It was the first to accurately depict the carnage of war, and changed the direction of this genre of movies for all time. The initial D-Day scene was fantastic. Afterwards, Tom Hanks is ordered to chose a team of his men and look for James MacGuffin Ryan from Iowa. In order to achieve this goal, Hanks takes us across the entire back drop of world war 2, all the while making us ask, is all this worth just one man? ...

I watched this movie during a project at school. Saving Private Ryan was a beautiful and, above all, realistic film. The film presented in a realistic way how the war went then. Most of the film was set in Europe in 1944. The story is that American soldiers are being sent to Europe to fight against the Germans. The American boy James Francis Ryan is sent to Europe with his brothers as a soldier. After the invasion of Normandy it appears that all his other brothers have already died and he is the...

I don't think I can recall any Hollywood film that depicts the atrocities of the D-Day landings as effectively as this does at the start. Indeed, watching it you wonder just how any of the Allied soldiers managed to ever survive the water let alone fight their way up a beach crowded with tank traps, mines and barbed wire - all whilst under constant machine gun fire. Steven Spielberg leaves very little to our imagination and bodies drop left, right and centre with an authenticity that John Willia...

Rating 70/100 Amazing start showcasing just how atrocious and disgusting war is. Followed by a non-sensical plot point to rescue one person in a war where millions died, because he's the last guy in his family. I really liked the interpersonal relationships between the cast, the movie showcasing just how mortal everyone is and they can die at any moment is where the movie is at its best. Deducting some points because as you would expect the movie very much leans into American war propaganda, lo...
