the Chicago of the 1930s is the place not only of jazz music and depression, but also of street smarts and the art of survival. This classic, expertly crafted by George Roy Hill, brings to the big screen one of cinema's most entertaining and layered con stories. Accompanying the joyful rhythm of Ragtime, each scene both makes the audience laugh and challenges them to predict what the next move will be. When Paul Newman and Robert Redford appear on screen together, their chemistry flows so naturally that it becomes nearly impossible to think of these two names separately. One is experienced, the other is ambitious; one is tired, the other is greedy—but both breathe life into the same dangerous world. This is where the film's real appeal lies: this dynamic where the characters complement each other creates an intimate connection with the audience. Although the story begins out of a desire for revenge, it soon transforms into a much larger game. There is a powerful and ruthless crime boss in the middle; targeting him is possible not with ordinary cunning, but with a perfectly planned, layered and huge trap that contains a new surprise at every step. The film constructs this trap together with the audience; but it never reveals all its cards. The most powerful thing about the script is that it keeps the audience constantly active. Every dialogue feels like a clue, every look a message. You cannot fully discern where you were deceived and where you were informed. As soon as the movie ends, it becomes inevitable to look back and reconsider some scenes. It is no coincidence that it won seven Academy Awards in 1973. In addition to the Best Film award, the production, which is also appreciated in branches such as directing, screenplay and costume, reflects the spirit of the time in a very successful way both visually and dramatically. But what is truly impressive is that it still looks fresh and vibrant despite decades having passed. Standing at this rare intersection of crime cinema and comedy-drama, the film doesn't just present a story to the audience—it also makes them part of the action.

Say what you like about the undoubted chemistry between Paul Newman ("Henry") and Robert Redford ("Johnny") this film belongs to a superb effort from the understated but hugely entertaining Robert Shaw. He's the hard-nosed gangster "Lonnegan" who gets (anonymously) fleeced by a "Johnny" who quickly decides that discretion is the better part of valour and gets out of Dodge. It's at this stage that the two grifters decide that their mark could be good for a great deal more money and so set up an e...

**It is imperative to rediscover this magnificent film.** There are many films about con artists and confidence games (Ocean’s Eleven and its two or three sequels, for example), but I had never seen one that was so good-natured and in which the main characters were so likable. It's a light, family comedy from the 70s, in which a group of tricksters decides to risk their lives to deceive a powerful and rich mobster in order to avenge a friend, killed by his hitmen. This film was, at the time, ...
