The vast majority of war films focus on the enemy; the danger on the opposite side of the front, the bullets, the life-and-death struggle between the trenches. Dec. Stanley Kubrick, on the other hand, turns his camera in the opposite direction with this 88-minute work shot in 1957 and shows with cold-blooded certainty where the real threat is hidden. The French front of the First World War is both the setting and the spirit of the film. A war mired in stalemate, exhausted soldiers, and orders filled with promises of victory that will never come true... Kubrick sets up this atmosphere so expertly with black and white images that when you pass from the trenches to the headquarters halls, you feel that you are passing through two separate worlds. The stark contrast between the soldiers in the mud and the gilded candlesticks makes you think you're watching a class analysis, not a war film. Kirk Douglas shoulders the moral backbone of the film while portraying an officer who has not yet lost his conscience. Opposing him are generals who sit at the top of the hierarchy and think only of victory statistics. The conflict between these two worlds becomes the true heart of the drama. The question of who is right and who is strong becomes an increasingly heavy burden on the viewer's mind. Here, Kubrick questions not so much the war itself as the system created by the war. It tells how human life becomes abstracted at a strategy table, how cowardice and courage are defined in arbitrary forms, and how justice turns into a tool in the hands of the powerful. The film's tone never shouts; on the contrary, it progresses with an icy calm; this coldness, however, deepens the anger even further. Over the years, many war films have become outdated because they have been buried in history along with the period they depict. This work, however, remains fresh because what it portrays is not so much a historical event as an unchanging human weakness. Wherever power is exempt from accountability, what this film portrays comes to life somewhere. Kubrick said this in 1957, and no one has been able to prove him wrong since then.

Madness and Patsies Crash Together In Kubrick's Explosive Thunderbolt. Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory is holding up rather well these days, in fact it's as pertinent and relevant as ever. It's 1916 and the French and German armies are in opposing mud trenches, when the French are ordered to undertake a suicidal assault on a German held hill, many of the soldiers are quick to realise it's an impossible order to see through to its conclusion and retreat, something which brings charges of c...

"Col. Dax" (Kirk Dougas) is cajoled by "Gen. Broulard" (Adolphe Menjou) into taking his Great War weary regiment on one last mission in occupied France. Frankly, it's little better than a suicide one, but his operational commander "Gen. Mireau" (George Macready) is determined at all costs that they succeed. Let battle commence! Only the French soldiers quickly realise that they are facing a well armed, immovable, German opponent and are either killed or driven back. Desperate to motivate his men...

**A short and objective film, with a clear and still relevant message, as well as a huge performance by Kirk Douglas.** There are several films about World War I, but it is far from being seen by the public as one of the best. In fact, it seems to me a little forgotten today. It is, however, timely and current in its pacifist message in which the greatest absurdity of war is emphasized in a partially true story, in which a group of three French soldiers is shot by cowardice after joining an i...
