Gladiator
Details
There are some films that took shape under Ridley Scott's direction; they transcend time and become a cultural legacy. This film, which was released in 2000, is exactly such a thing. Reflecting the splendor of ancient Rome, corruption and the deepest despair of man on the white screen at the same time, Gladiator manages to go far beyond being just a period movie. The character Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, is not a one-dimensional revenge hero. This man, devoted to his country, family, and honor, learns bitterly how loyalty can become a burden rather than a blessing. Crowe brings both physical weight and emotional vulnerability to the character. Every time they appear on screen, accompanied by the music rising in the background, the audience feels like they're about to pay the price for something. Joaquin Phoenix is one of the elements that truly makes this film unforgettable. His performance as Commodus reveals how jealousy, inadequacy, and the hunger for power can corrupt a human being. When you look at him, you feel both hatred and a strange sense of pity; remaining within this dichotomy is one of the film's greatest achievements. The music, composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard, transports the audience to a different dimension, even independent of the visuals. John Mathieson's camera frames the chaos in the arenas, the cold marble corridors of Rome and the dimly lit battlefields of the Alps in different but equally powerful forms. The film actually quietly raises many universal questions: What does a person live for after losing someone? Does power inevitably eat away at morality? Can the applause of the crowd be considered a real victory? All these questions breathe organically within the turmoil of the Roman Empire as envisioned by the screenwriters. this film, which never loses its tempo for a moment during its 171-minute duration, is one of the kind of works that you think is still extremely underestimated, despite the fact that it won the Best Picture award at the 2001 Oscar ceremony. When you watch it, you have fun, you're moved, but most of all, you think.

Gladiator has been my most favorite film of all time. It is an epic masterpiece in many ways and it really explains why despite the numerous viewings, Gladiator still amuses me with its powerful imageries and many other crucial aspects so that it won five Academy Awards. This film is very well written, the well-ensemble casts, the A-class acting (especially Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix), the stunning cinematography and definitely a strong character of Maximus (magnificently portrayed by Rus...

They said you were a giant. They said you can crush a man's skull with one hand. Ridley Scott's Gladiator is not a perfect film, I would think that the hardiest of fans, of which I'm firmly one, know this deep down. Yet just like Commodus in the film is keen to point out that he himself has other virtues that are worthy, so does Gladiator the film. Enough in fact to make it an everlasting favourite of genre fans and worthy of the Academy Award acknowledgements it received. In narrative ter...

This has got just about everything from "Spartacus" (1960) to "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" (1964) via a bit of "Quo Vadis" (1951) to it - and Ridley Scott has managed to create a magnificent spectacle of a film. Russell Crowe is the eponymous soldier "Maximus". Commander of the Armies of the Rhine for Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) and his designated successor - until, that is, the emperor's son "Commodus" (Joaquin Phoenix) and his sister "Lucilla" (an efficient Connie Nielse...
