This short but extremely harsh BBC animation, signed by Peter Baynham and consisting of only six episodes, demonstrates an amazing skill at making the audience laugh and offend from the very first frame. The production, which promises much more than the average adult animation, is born from a laboratory environment based on animal experiments, but its main issue extends to a completely different place. At the center of the story is a group of experimental animals that have been taught to speak, feel, and think like humans in a closed-off facility for years. Forced to face the outside world after gaining their freedom, these characters encounter an extremely familiar chaos, not the paradise they expected when they stepped into modern life. At this very point, the production transforms from ordinary satire into an existentialist comedy. The characters voiced by names such as Steve Coogan, Julia Davis and Simon Pegg are actually reflecting the most ridiculous, smallest and most embarrassing aspects of humanity while trying to imitate humanity. Class anxiety, the search for status, the need for belonging and social pressure; all this becomes both funnier and much more painful when it is conveyed through the eyes of animals that are still trying to learn how to be human. The production asks the audience, "Are we really that different from them?" he whispers constantly without ever directly asking his question. The visual aspect of the animation is deliberately kept simple and rough; this aesthetic preference is a conscious decision that emphasizes the intelligence of the text and the intensity of the dialogues. Baynham's pen draws on that cold, dry, and ruthless irony found in the finest examples of English humor. When you laugh, you pause for a moment because you realize that what you're laughing at is actually yourself. The production, which surprised many viewers when it was first released, gradually gained a cult status over time. This series, which is not only a criticism of animal rights or experiments, but also tries to paint a much broader portrait of humans, leaves an unforgettable mark despite its short life. This six-part journey leaves you with both laughter and a slight bitterness when it's over—which is the surest sign of good satire.
