Telling a story that simultaneously conveys the chaotic world of high school corridors, the weight of immigrant identity, and the raw emotions of adolescence is no easy task. Co-created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, this Netflix production Deconstructs all these layers with great skill and as a result reveals one of the most impressive youth series in recent years. Devi Vishwakumar draws an excellent student profile on paper. He is successful, ambitious, focused on his goals. But life never works out exactly as it does on paper. Decoupled between two cultures with his Indian-American identity, carrying a deep mourning for the loss of his father and struggling with anger that he can't restrain, Devi makes the audience laugh and deeply affects. This balance is one of the series' strongest aspects. This project, known to bear biographical elements, takes an important step forward by placing a character of South Asian origin at the center of the narrative. Devi's relationship with her mother, the tension between cultural expectations and individual freedom, takes the series far beyond an ordinary high school romance story. Dec. Poorna Jagannathan, who portrays the mother, offers extraordinary depth in every scene. The series progresses with comedic moments that occasionally make it to the list, and with emotional moments that unexpectedly hit you in the chest. Friendships, loves, identity quests, and losses; all intertwined with each other. Supporting characters like Fabiola and Eleanor also complement the spirit of the series; each stands out with their own story and refuses to remain in the background. This universe, which has expanded over the course of four seasons, meticulously follows not only Devi's romantic adventures but also her journey of self-discovery. Each season presents a character who grows a little more mature and a narrative that becomes a little bolder. Sometimes when you laugh in a scene, you notice that your eyes fill up immediately afterwards; the fact that these transitions feel so natural is the most obvious indicator of the quality of the production. This series, which captivates viewers with both its heart and intelligence, appeals not only to young people but also to anyone who has left their own teenage years behind.
