Sometimes the simplest question gives rise to the longest story. "How did I meet your mother? a sentence that begins with "turns into a journey that makes you forget to breathe, makes you laugh, makes you think and sometimes squeezes your heart for a full nine seasons. Written on the crowded streets of New York, under the shadow of a yellow hat, this story floats in much deeper waters, although it may seem like a search for love when viewed superficially. In this long-running journey, which stretches from 2005 to 2014, the viewer follows Ted Mosby not only someone trying to find the right person, but a man trying to find himself. The four friends surrounding him are characters each with their own unique world within them. Marshall and Lily's relationship reflects a maturity that is rare in modern television, while Barney Stinson goes beyond the funny and turns into a deeply shocking figure at unexpected moments. Robin, on the other hand, stands out as a strong, complex character who is rediscovered in each episode. One of the series' greatest achievements is its use of narrative structure as a tool. The narration of the past by a voice speaking from the future ceases to be an ordinary fiction trick and turns into a masterful game played with time, regret, hope and memory itself. We only realize which moments are truly important later; just like in real life. Yes, some parts are light-hearted and fun, while other scenes come with an entirely unexpected emotional depth. The series often achieves this balance successfully and knows how to both make the audience laugh and make them think. Towards the end, controversial decisions are being made; this is not a structure on which everyone agrees. But even this discussion itself is proof of how deeply the series left its mark. When New York ceases to be a city and becomes a feeling, when the corner table of five friends at Maclaren's bar turns into a refuge, and it becomes clear that every search for "that" person is actually an inner journey, it also becomes clear why this series is still so talked about.
