Agatha Harkness, one of the most charismatic villains in the Marvel universe, was not a character met in WandaVision only as an antagonist; she was etched in the memory as someone who attracted the audience's eye every time she entered the scene, knitted with a dark intelligence, carrying a unique energy of her own. Kathryn Hahn's sharp wit and menacing elegance in this character provided an excellent foundation for a spin-off series. Agatha All Along, created by Jac Schaeffer, takes this foundation and carries it to a much darker, much stranger, and unexpectedly emotional place. The series is about an Agatha who has lost her power and is trapped. However, this state of helplessness, far from diminishing the character, actually makes him/her much more interesting. This journey, which alternates between pride, anger and unexpected vulnerability of a witch deprived of what she has, Decays markedly from Marvel's usual heroic archetypes. There is neither a world to be saved nor a countdown timer here; instead there is a mythical path with its own rules, a desperate and incompatible community of women trying to cross that path, and extremely human questions underlying it. Agatha All Along never loses its dark comedy woven with a gothic aesthetic. Each episode offers a unique atmosphere within itself; sometimes tense, sometimes sad, and sometimes filled with pure entertainment. The series integrates witchcraft mythology and especially coven culture into the Marvel universe in a raw and authentic way. It manages to fit themes of female solidarity, identity search, and confronting one's past into a magical framework. The cast is perfectly suited to carry this atmosphere. Patti LuPone's powerful scenes, Joe Locke's mysterious and layered interpretation add unexpected depth to the series, while Sasheer Zamata and Ali Ahn also give their characters original voices. Agatha All Along feels more like a witchcraft tale than a superhero series and boldly steps into a tone Marvel hasn't explored in a long time. The feeling it leaves behind when it's over is a kind of longing as much as satisfaction.
