If that opening theme song, etched in the minds of 1990s children, still rings in our ears, there's a reason for that. X-Men was not just a comic book adaptation; it was also a profound metaphor built on being different, being ostracized, and still standing strong. When this universe reappears on the screen decades later, the meeting of nostalgia and a mature narrative transports the viewer to a completely different place. X-Men '97 is more than just a sequel picking up where its predecessor left off. The production manages to truly develop the characters while remaining faithful to the animation aesthetics of the 90s. Familiar faces, familiar conflicts; but this time everything is much more serious and much more complicated. The world where mutants live cannot tolerate their existence, let alone love them. And the burden borne by a team that spares no effort to protect this world grows heavier with each episode. The most striking aspect of the series is its courage to appeal to an adult audience. The hero-villain dichotomy takes a backseat; moral gray areas, identity inquiries, and concepts of collective trauma take center stage in the narrative. The theme of discrimination is addressed directly and unavoidably confrontational, not behind an allegorical veil. In this respect, the series functions as a mirror that questions the spirit of its era rather than being escapist superhero entertainment. The visual language also carries this weight. The retro drawing style is a deliberate choice; although it pays homage to the past, the story's pulse beats very contemporary. The rhythm of the script, the dynamics between the characters and especially the dramatic Decapitations experienced in certain episodes make it clear that this production is not an ordinary nostalgic revival. X-Men '97 is experienced on different levels for both those who lived through that era and those who later encountered the comic book legacy. For some it is a window into childhood, for others it is a bold narrative that re-reads today's fragile social realities through the prism of superpowers. In both cases, it becomes difficult to take your eyes off the screen.

The nostalgia factor in this animated series is truly remarkable. The creators did an exceptional job of capturing the essence of the original 90s characters. However, there is one notable drawback in the form of voice casting. Some voices, like those of characters Rogue and Wolverine, are difficult to listen to. Despite this flaw, the overall voice work for other characters is commendable, making the show enjoyable. After completing the series and reflecting on my initial review, I have deci...
