Among works that deal with the world of medicine, from time to time a name emerges that gradually transforms into an archetype or even a cultural symbol. Gregory House is exactly such a character. This doctor, who suffers from constant pain in his leg, walks around with a cane that he never drops from his hand and an addiction to painkillers, represents one of the most complex, disturbing and yet fascinating figures in the history of modern television. This work, written by David Shore, may appear at first glance to be a medical drama. In each episode there is a mysterious disease, a race, a search for a diagnosis. But the pulse of the real narrative beats elsewhere. House examines the human condition through the patient; it scrutinizes lies, denial, fear, and self-deception through illness. Hugh Laurie, the lead actor in the series, strikes this difficult balance flawlessly with a career-defining performance. To portray a character so convincingly, who both makes the audience hate himself and keeps them from taking their eyes off him, requires a rare skill. At the core of the structure lie references to Sherlock Holmes; even the name of the House character is a nod to this. But instead of reducing this series' literary legacy to dry respect, it adapts it to the spirit of its own era. Moral dilemmas, medical ethical questions and brutal observations of human nature keep the audience engaged on both an intellectual and emotional level for the entire eight seasons. Team dynamics, power struggles in hospital corridors, and the mental resilience limits of the people around House also add a unique depth to this structure. Watching how characters change, break, or resist over time transforms clinical drama into a true panorama of humanity. This narrative, sustained over eight seasons, has taken its place as one of the longest-running and most consistent works in television history. While watching House, you may be uncomfortable from time to time, you may laugh from time to time; but either way, it is certain that you will not be able to stop yourself from opening the next episode.

I liked this show because House's character, but I was oblivious to most of their medical conversations. An advice: Don't watch it unless you understand a lot of medical terminology.

Hugh Laurie brings the house down in this role. sorry, I just had to make that pun. If you want to be utterly entertained by a self-destructive Vicodin addict as he childishly plays God with the lives of his patients and root for him every step of the way as he does it, then this is the series for you.
