This anthology series, co-created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, came to screens with a structure that both embraced and subverted the American horror tradition. Since 2011, each season has signed a brand new contract with the audience by presenting a completely different universe, different characters, and a different nightmare. This is something different from the usual TV series addiction; when each season ends, it feels like you've finished a novel. The series' core strength lies in its ability to translate the deep-seated fears of American society into a visual and dramatic language. Distrust of the mental health system, the dark side of religious authority, social exclusion, racism, pressure on sexuality, political manipulation... All these elements are blended so skillfully with supernatural elements that the fear sometimes feels like it comes not from the screen but from real life itself. Yes, there are ghosts and witches, but what truly frightens people is... The narrative structure is also very unusual. One season tells about power battles in the shadow of witch spells, another delves deep into cult psychology; one turns the aesthetics of a 1980s summer camp into a slasher nightmare, one paints a portrait of a community just on the eve of the apocalypse. Each season has its own internal logic and creates its own atmosphere. Nevertheless, thanks to certain actors repeatedly appearing in different roles, the entire series conveys a strange and fascinating sense of family. Alongside names like Emma Roberts and Denis O'Hare, every new actor who joins the series brings their own unique flair to this universe. The visual aesthetics may appear inconsistent at first glance; however, this is not a deficiency but a deliberate plurality. Each season takes shape according to its own era and atmosphere. American Horror Story is neither a pure horror series nor an ordinary period drama. It is an original project that aims to disturb the audience, make them question and confront them from time to time, which is often successful in this goal. A production that uses fear as a tool, but whose real problem lies much deeper.
