Imagine a man stepping outside after spending twenty-five years behind bars. Someone who was stabbed in the back by people he swore allegiance to, picked up from the complicated streets of New York and thrown into the vast, dust-clouded plains of Central America. Tulsa King presents the audience with an extraordinary story that emerges precisely from this moment of rupture, carrying both sadness and joy in an unexpected way. Sylvester Stallone's performance as "Dwight Manfredi" forms the heart of the series. We've seen Stallone in characters who talk with fists before, and here he plays a man who has aged, looks at the world with slightly bewildered eyes, but has not lost a single bit of his pride. Dwight, struggling to survive in the unfamiliar territory of Oklahoma, both makes you laugh and breaks your heart in every scene. The fact that this balance can be maintained so naturally is one of the series' greatest achievements. In the production bearing Taylor Sheridan's signature, the open spaces of westerns that raise dust clouds intertwine with the narrow backstreets of classic mafia dramas. However, Tulsa King doesn't just merge these two genres; he takes them both and transports them to an unexpected place. What emerges is an original narrative that slightly reverses the usual rules of the genre, touching on universal themes of human nature such as loneliness, loyalty and belonging. One of the strongest aspects of the series is the development of relationships between the characters around it. The people Dwight encounters in Tulsa may seem ordinary at first glance: a horse herder, a local shopkeeper, a young lawman... But over time, you realize that each of these faces has its own weight, that each transforms Dwight in a different way. The concepts of crime, loyalty, and betrayal are reexamined through these relationships. The effort of an aging man to redefine his life is rarely placed at the center of a narrative that uses the mafia as its material. Tulsa King does this expertly, thereby appealing to both crime drama fans and those curious about the character's inner journey. When you sit in front of the screen, you may find yourself immersed in this story much more deeply than expected.

I have to confess I stumbled across this, quite by chance. I don't watch a lot of US entertainment these days. I did however, grow up watching my share of Stallone action films, so a dash of nostalgia and curiosity, drew me in. There's nothing terribly original by now about the plot of Tulsa King. Its Mafia style antics are noting new. I think it was a smart move, playing this as a dark comedy. It fits the well worn character, Stallone, inhabits. That said, I guess the key question is, ...

It's not Shakespeare but it's a fun show to watch after you get home from work or school. Plus it's nice to see a show that is set somewhere other then usual: NYC or LA. I really liked it and I'm looking forward to next season.
