The unique creativity of Japanese pop culture sometimes takes such unexpected forms that the viewer does not know what to laugh or think. It is at this point that this 2022 mini-series comes onto the scene; It creates a real sense of urgency and puts people in a completely different mood when they realize the absurd basis underneath it. This short but intense production, consisting of four parts, uses the mockumentary format. This choice is not a coincidence; The script knowingly and skillfully instrumentalizes the illusion of realism offered by this format. The cameras are positioned as if they were the cameras of a documentary team, the characters speak by looking directly at the screen, and all this fiction is constantly in the back of the viewer's mind, "I wonder if it's real?" It keeps the question alive. Of course it's not real; but that feeling is the greatest strength of the structure. At the center of the story is the Japanese male idol group known as Super Express. However, being an idol here is not limited to stage performance only; group members find themselves involved in a much larger, universal mission. Something like saving the world. No matter how exaggerated this sentence sounds, the production takes this tension extremely seriously; So much so that the boundaries of comedy and science fiction are becoming increasingly blurred. This narrative, shaped under the direction of Hana Matsumoto, questions not only idol culture, but also the concept of heroism, the weight of fame, and how ordinary people behave in extraordinary situations. The episodes are short, but each carries its own layer of tension and humor. The cast is the most critical element that keeps the fiction alive; The mockumentary format immediately exposes the slightest artificiality in the acting, but this cast doesn't fall into that trap. Offering a different layer of meaning for those familiar with the Japanese idol industry, the production promises a truly unique viewing experience for those unfamiliar with this world. Only four episodes; but it's good evidence that four episodes can say so much.
