High Potential
Details
Even within an irregular and turbulent existence that bears the burdens of life, some people see the universe differently. Morgan is one of these people; a seemingly ordinary but mentally extremely unusual woman who has taken sole responsibility for three children, trying to survive in the noise of Los Angeles. The way he perceives the world captures connections, patterns, and details that most people miss, almost like a reflex. Is this ability a blessing or a burden? Throughout the series, the weight of this problem never decreases. Kaitlin Olson portrays this character with one of those rare talents that makes her feel both ridiculous and profound. Olson, better known in the comedy field, opens up a completely different dimension here; he displays a boundless, sometimes exhausting, yet utterly captivating energy. The experienced, procedure-oriented detective played by Daniel Sunjata is a perfect counterbalance. The chemistry these two characters form together carries the backbone of the series; the fact that two people so different from each other are walking towards the same goal creates both tension and a strange warm-up. The signature style of creator Drew Goddard, who has left his mark on a wide range of genres including The Good Place and The Martian, is distinctly reflected in the series. Instead of relying on clichés of the crime and mystery genre, Goddard's fiction highlights human vulnerabilities. Murders and investigations provide a framework, of course, but what is really described are the people who live within this framework, their mistakes, connections and unexpected meanings they give to each other. Adapted from the French production HPI, this series manages to create a feeling unique to the spirit of Los Angeles and the tempo of American television, while clearly acknowledging its debt to its source. Themes such as single parenthood, social pressure, and intellectual loneliness gradually emerge from beneath the surface of the detective thriller. Reminding the audience that intelligence does not always make things easier; on the contrary, it sometimes drags a person to an even more complicated place, this production stands out as one of the most satisfying examples of its kind.

Just watched the first episode of High Potential (2024), and while my review is based on just one episode, I really hope this show goes the distance. Kaitlin Olson plays a fantastic role. It’s early, but I can definitely see a Mentalist/The Closer-style crime drama unfolding from this.

This is definitely one of my favourite shows at the moment. Not the average cop drama... It's absolutely genius!
