It is human nature to wonder what lies behind perfection. Questioning what the perfect lives displayed on social media and those bright smiles reflected on the screen really mean is increasingly on our agenda. This South African-produced series sits right at the heart of this questioning and holds up a mirror to us that is both familiar and profoundly unsettling. Joyce presents a carefully crafted marriage proposal to her thousands of followers every day. The photos are flawless, the captions are inspiring, the comments are full of praise. She is the perfect match for the modern age; at least that's what everyone knows. However, behind the screens, a completely different reality is trying to make its way into existence. Her husband's infidelity begins to shake not only Joyce's private life but also the very fabric of her existence. Because they will not only have to face the risk of losing a spouse, but also the risk of having the identity they have built crumble. Gugu Gumede strikes a rather fine balance when playing Joyce. It allows the viewer to both sympathize and question from time to time. S'dumo Mtshali and Kwanele Mthethwa also add different pressure points to the story, so that the series goes far beyond a one-dimensional deception melodrama. While remaining within the soap opera format, the production takes seriously the issues of fakeness and identity performance brought about by the social media age. Nowadays, many people organize their lives like a showcase; when this showcase cracks, what lies hidden inside is revealed. The series examines this turning point through both a personal and a societal lens. With its twenty-two-part structure, the story gradually but steadily deepens. What initially seemed like a familiar deception drama turns into a multi-layered inquiry into loyalty, addiction, social oppression and female identity as it progresses. South Africa's rich cultural fabric is also felt in the background, giving the story the power to tell universal themes from a local perspective. Although it has taken on a controversial position among critics and audiences, the questions it poses and the discomfort it creates are noteworthy. Sometimes the most instructive productions are the ones that disturb us the most.
