Imagine a story that takes place on the line between homelessness and divinity. A young girl whose father disappeared due to gambling debts, who was evicted from her home, and who ended up on the streets... Just when despair had reached its peak, his life was transformed by an unexpected spark. But this change is not by any ordinary chance; it begins when the earth god, who has been protecting a sacred temple for centuries, withdraws himself from this world and transfers divine power and responsibility to him. Kamisama Hajimemashita, adapted from Julietta Suzuki's manga, may seem at first glance like a classic shoujo romance story, but it offers a much more layered experience. The series explores the rich tapestry of Japanese mythology, Shinto beliefs, and images from the spirit world through the eyes of a modern high school student. What does it mean to be a goddess? Does power bring responsibility, or does it become a burden? These questions echo silently in the background of every episode. What particularly keeps the anime going is the finely crafted dynamics between the characters. Kitsune is different from all the mythological figures we know; she emerges as someone deep, restless, and still coming to terms with her past. The relationship the main character establishes with this complex being neither collapses into simple romance nor devolves into an ordinary power fantasy. The attraction between them represents a long and honest journey from mistrust to trust. The visual language also supports this atmosphere. The temple scenes, the colors of the spirit world, and the yokai designs quietly introduce the viewer to Japan's mystical cultural heritage. The music manages the emotional shifts so naturally that the scenes' escalation into dramatic moments occurs imperceptibly. This series, which sets the themes of growth, belonging, and self-discovery within a fantastical framework, remains one of the most cohesive examples of its genre. Over the course of two seasons, it neither repeats itself nor leaves a feeling of being quickly consumed. On the contrary, it evokes an inner desire to move on to the next episode after each one. After watching it, you may find yourself becoming interested in Japanese mythology and even wanting to walk through a temple courtyard.
