The moment David Attenborough's voice is heard, the world seems to stand still. That familiar, deep and calm voice draws the audience not to the comfort of their seats, but to the very heart of the planet. The first Planet Earth had raised the bar for documentary cinema a decade ago; this second encounter renders that bar invisible. Over the course of six episodes, the camera virtually reinvents the world from around the globe. This journey from uninhabited islands to lush forests, from volcano deserts to snow-covered mountain peaks, from sabana plains to growing cities is not only a geographical excursion, but a moment of confrontation with life itself. While each episode paints a portrait of a different ecosystem, it reminds us of a common truth: the struggle for existence on this planet never ceases. The most striking aspect of the production is that it shows wildlife as it is, rather than romanticizing it. The dark races for survival, the fragile balances of nature and the complex relationship that man has established with this balance are presented to the audience without any off-stage commentary. This honesty sometimes weighs heavily on the heart; but it also profoundly astonishes one. When it comes to visual language, Planet Earth II represents a technical revolution. Drone footage, ultra-high resolution, and scenes requiring hours of patience reveal animal behavior from never-before-seen angles. While watching, one sometimes has difficulty believing that these are truly images from the wild. The music of Hans Zimmer, Jasha Klebe and Jacob Shea is so intertwined with the images that it becomes difficult to distinguish where the sound ends and the image begins. This synchronization amplifies the emotional impact. The final section, which deals with cities, stands out as perhaps the boldest choice. The story of a species trying to survive in the midst of cities shaped by human hands says difficult things about climate change, but it does so not with didactic language, but with pure observation. Planet Earth II does much more than entertain the viewer: it reminds him how unique, how fragile and how beautiful the planet he lives on is.
