The Haunting of Hill House
Details
Some houses aren't just walls and stones. Some houses remember you. This 2018 series by Mike Flanagan is one of the rare works that does not hesitate to touch the darkest corners of the mind while you are watching, but while doing so, skillfully carries all the fragility of a family drama. Inspired by Shirley Jackson's classic literary work, this ten-part series takes the horror genre far beyond its conventional boundaries. The House on the Hill presents the lives of the Crain family, shaped in the shadow of the events they experienced in childhood, with a bold narrative structure that intertwines both the past and the present. Each episode focuses on a different member of the family, delving deeply into that person's traumas, fears, and repressions. Thus, the viewer not only watches the horror elements; they also deeply feel the characters, carrying their pain almost as if it were their own. Flanagan's directorial approach relies on atmosphere rather than surprise scares. Long, uninterrupted shots; shadows moving around the house; details you pass by unnoticed in the background... All of this creates a strange tension that grows as you watch, and although you don't want it to end, you also hesitate to let it continue. The series gradually pulls you in instead of making you jump off the couch, and at some point you start to question where the house ends and the mind begins. The acting cast embodies this structure perfectly. Each member of the family, in both their youthful and adult forms, brings the story to life with the believability they convey on screen. Especially Victoria Pedretti and Oliver Jackson-Cohen's performances remain unforgettable for a long time. Grief, trauma, escape, and confrontation... The series does not use ghosts only as an element of fear; it treats them as reflections of things that we cannot let go of, memories that we cannot tame. That's why The House on the Hill offers a deeply meaningful experience even for those who don't like the horror genre. Some things are not enough to watch once. You have to return to some houses many times.

Overall, it's a worthy effort. There are many creepy moments and nifty ghosts. Some episodes are oozing with dread and horror. It's twisty, as all new shows seem to be and the twists are rather satisfying. However, there are moments when things get a little convoluted, a bit nonsensical and far too wordy. Some conversations go on way too long, hammering the point home until you want to punch a ghost right in the face. This happens towards the end and may leave you feeling sorta let down. But the...

Is the house really haunted or is everyone slowly just losing their minds? Not a stereotypical horror. In fact the scares could be quite few and far between but the characters continued to drive the story forward. Every episode seemed to have a scene of snoozefest meandering dialogue but the rest is brilliant.

This is probably most overrated TV-show. For 8.2% I was expecting something almost masterpiece, Godlike good TV-show, but it's not even close. First of all it's not scary, secondly it's slow boring drama about disfunctional family, thirdly non of the characters have something that I would feel sympathy or care for. Even more, they are annoying starting from junkie whiny brother ending with cynical one. Right now I'm on 7th episode of first season & I can't wait when we finish it. Plot is so bori...
