The story of a teenager who has to risk everything to survive on the dark streets of New York makes Banana Fish much more than an ordinary anime production. Adapted from Yoshimi Ötomo's legendary manga series that began in 1985, this production proves how stunning and profound a world that was drawn decades ago can still speak today. At the heart of the story is a character who is both older than his age and younger than his age. Ash Lynx is a young man who has undergone a brutal street education, was formed inside the corporate criminal world, and looks cold and calculating from the outside. However, beneath this coldness lies suppressed anger, a desire for reckoning, and perhaps an unacknowledged innocence. As the secrets of his past are gradually revealed, the audience finds itself both in deep sadness and in the midst of a growing tension. The production recreates 1980s New York with an incredible visual language. This city, where collapse, poverty, crime, and power struggles coexist, functions almost like a character. Moving between mafia hierarchies, networks of political conspiracies and street gangs, Ash's story is breathtaking with action scenes, but it takes its main weight from human ties. Dec. One of the most striking aspects of the series is the relationship between the two main characters. Japanese photographer Eiji, who is included in Ash's world like the opening of a completely different window, stands out as a sensitive being who tries to protect himself from contact with this dirty reality. The bond between the two characters becomes so organic and sincere over time that this friendship or commitment becomes the main rope that allows the audience to hold on to the entire series. Dec. Banana Fish, with its bold narrative that doesn't shy away from violence and trauma, tackles themes that many anime shy away from confronting. Productions that can so sincerely address themes like crime, abuse of power, and the human cost of survival are extremely rare. You are about to encounter a narrative that engages both the heart and the mind, leaving an impression on the mind for a long time after watching.
