Columbo
Details
Imagine one of the most iconic detective characters in the history of television: he always has a crumpled topcoat on, an unfinished cigar in his hand, a messy but calculated expression on his face. Columbo has managed to transcend being merely a detective series with this extraordinary character he has brought to the screen since 1971. Lieutenant Columbo, portrayed by Peter Falk, stands out as a character positioned in stark contrast to the classic detective archetype. Facing criminals accustomed to expensive cars, sharp suits and grandiose offices, this messy, clumsy-looking detective is carefully designed, as if to be underestimated at first glance. This very illusion forms the core magic of the series. Columbo's victories are not due to superior technology or physical strength; they are the product of that unique intelligence that can read a person deeply, wait patiently and come back from the door at just the right moment. The series also carries a courage far beyond its period in terms of narrative structure. The viewer already knows from the beginning who committed the murder. The thriller, "who did it?" not from the question, "how will he be caught?" he feeds off the question. This reverse-engineered structure immerses the viewer in the criminal's mind, making them follow him almost with empathy—until Columbo enters the scene. Those famous "I wanted to ask one more thing" moments are the climax of this tension. This universe, created by William Link and Richard Levinson, also holds up a sharp mirror to 1970s America. Wealth, privilege, and power form the backdrop of crime in nearly every episode. Columbo, on the other hand, functions as a figure who has infiltrated this world through the eyes of an ordinary person, subtly exposing arrogance and self-importance. In this long-running journey spanning ten seasons and sixty-seven episodes, Peter Falk has been honored with numerous awards, including the Golden Globe. However, the series' true legacy is much greater than the awards. Columbo is one of the most enduring proofs of how a character becomes legendary, that a well-written story cannot be timed out, and that true intelligence will always prevail over the show.

I can't believe there are so few reviews on this, Columbo is one of the defining detectives on television. He's so low key, so unimposing, and it's a pleasure watching him take down all those criminals that think they are are smarter than him, better than him because of, well how little and, well how wrinkled and cheap he appears. He's the opposite of so many detectives on television these days, the everyman solving crimes. It's just a brilliant approach to a character, and one that is fan...
