Defending Jacob
Details
At the point where the eternal belief in the innocence of a child and the darkness that has been carried for generations collide, disturbing questions about human nature rise up. This eight-part mini-series for Apple TV+ is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by William Landay and brought to the screen by the meticulous pen of lawyer and author Mark Bomback. The story begins with the death of a young man in the seemingly quiet suburbs of Massachusetts, but soon transforms into a much deeper and personal tragedy. What makes the issue really striking is that it goes far beyond the question of who is the killer: how do parents feel when they have to know if their own child committed a murder? Is it harder to answer this question, or to live without knowing the answer? In this production, Chris Evans steps far away from his usual heroic on-screen persona. He conveys with extraordinary simplicity the fragmentation of a father who is a district attorney and performs his profession passionately, with the obligation to defend both justice and his son. Michelle Dockery, on the other hand, literally becomes an integral part of the screen in her role that simultaneously embodies the fragility and resilience of motherhood. Jacob, played by young Jaeden Martell, is perhaps the most memorable character in the series, while also being the most ambiguous and unsettling one. The series skillfully intertwines the cold procedural world of investigating a bureaucratic murder with the internal collapse of a family. The tension between the mechanical operation of the legal system and the irrational power of the parental instinct grows more intense with each episode. The choice to constantly leave the audience hanging instead of pushing them to a certain judgment is the boldest and most rational narrative decision of the series. Moreover, Defending Jacob is not just a crime story; it is a family drama that questions how a person can be blinded by their loved ones, how social judgment can fall on a family like a conviction. The truth is sometimes hidden not in the courtroom, but in the way people look at each other. And the series captures exactly these looks, keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat until the very last episode.
