I Am Not Okay with This
Details
Being in the middle of adolescence is already a chaos in itself — but when this is added to an uncontrollable, dangerous and as yet incomprehensible force, what emerges turns into a story that is both ridiculous and deeply shocking. Syd, played by Sophia Lillis, is far from being an ordinary high school student. This young girl, who feels like a stranger in the new town she has moved to, Decodes her feelings in a diary, prefers to put distance between herself and the world; gradually discovers that the storm inside her has not only a hormonal, but a much more physical and destructive dimension. The series neither presents this exploration process as a heroic tale nor as a direct horror narrative. It stands right in the middle, and this ambiguity is its greatest strength. In this short but impactful season adapted from Charles Forsman's graphic novel, Jonathan Entwistle examines the concept of superpowers through a completely different lens. The extraordinary talent here is not a gift; it is an expression of suppressed anger, unspoken emotions and the inner world of a teenager who has not yet defined his identity. In this respect, the series successfully integrates the X-Men aesthetic into a coming-of-age story. The friendship established with Stanley, played by Wyatt Oleff, forms the emotional backbone of the series. The chemistry between the two characters is both fun and fragile; it makes the audience laugh while simultaneously affecting them deeply. The series' dark comedy tone also stands on this balance: sometimes painfully realistic, sometimes absurdly funny. With its visual language inspired by eighties aesthetics, musical selections and that nostalgic but stunning atmosphere, I Am Not Okay with This draws the audience both into the past and into a very familiar inner world. Loneliness, the search for identity, the vulnerability that love brings, and social pressure — all of these are gathered in the body of a single young girl, and at some point she is forced to explode. Despite having only seven episodes, the series delivers the intensity that some long-running productions fail to provide. Syd's story may be left unfinished; but the mark it left is of a kind that is hard to erase.
