Villainous
Details
This Mexican-made animated series, which puts the world of villains on the table from a cartoonist's point of view, is one of the rare works that appeals to both children and adults by reversing the stereotypes of its genre. This project, in which Alan Ituriel is both the creator and part of the voice cast, proves how strong a voice Latin American animation can make in the international arena. Instead of glorifying evil, Villanos looks at it through a human lens. He takes the viewer on an unorthodox journey of empathy while describing the everyday lives, failures, small joys and existential troubles of super villains. Although each episode lasts approximately eleven minutes, the structure makes extremely efficient use of this short duration, balancing both humorous and emotional elements in a balanced manner. One of the most striking features of the series is that the characters are not merely superficial "antagonists" but are portrayed as deeply developed individuals. This approach, which makes the audience question which side to take, presents moral gray areas within an extremely entertaining narrative framework. The viewer becomes eagerly waiting not for the hero to prevail, but for the villains' next plan, which is a very smart attitude towards the traditional superhero narrative. In terms of visual language, Villanos combines the minimalist line aesthetics of Western animation with Latin American colorism. The carefully placed details and humorous elements in each frame offer a layered quality that rewards repeated viewings. The presence of names such as Todd Asayer and Mark Fischbach, who have grown up with internet culture, in the voice cast adds a contemporary energy to the structure that speaks directly to the digital generation. Simple enough for children to understand, brilliantly established enough for adults to appreciate, this series manages to rewrite the hero-villain duality that has been worn out for decades with a fresh eye. This narrative, accumulated over two seasons, leaves behind not only comedy but also a thought-provoking aftertaste when completed. It's truly impressive to see how such a short period of time can be enough to remind us that the wicked also have their own world within themselves.
